But Phoebe Snow was in town and Artie said he’d come by. “It was unpleasant and the music didn’t come off that well. “I had had the typical musician’s experience with TV,” said Simon. In separate interviews on their separate sides of town (Art on the east, Paul on the west), they tried to explain. One wondered, then, how Simon and Garfunkel came to do a record and TV special together and what’s behind the animosity that seems to exist. Not enormously successful as a solo, he has sought to establish himself as an actor and gained respect for his performances in Carnal Knowledge and Catch-22. Garfunkel, the non-writing partner, has recorded two albums, the cloyingly sweet Angel Clare and the more restrained Breakaway. Simon has concentrated on composing and making albums and has become one of popular music’s more craftsman-like songwriters, incorporating such diverse musical strains as reggae, gospel and jazz. Simon and Garfunkel have pursued independent paths for five years now. “So,” Simon taunted, “you’ve come crawling back.” Garfunkel deadpanned: “It’s very nice of you to invite me on your show.” The two sang a medley of old hits, their new single, and Garfunkel performed one other number, I Only Have Eyes For You. When Garfunkel did appear, Simon once again instigated the semi-hostile repartee that cropped up on last year’s Grammy show. Instead, my brother is gonna give a guitar lesson on the spot.” I know this is going to come as a disappointment to you, but Art Garfunkel is not going to be here tonight. “So this kangaroo walked over to the bar and said. Three minutes before show time, Simon walked on. “I think a standing ovation might be in order,” Belzer told the crowd. Though, when you’re talking about a slight variation of the duo’s prior perfection, their performances still leave little to desired.A studio version of My Little Town performed by Simon and Garfunkel Unfortunately, the problems Art Garfunkel has experienced with his vocal chords in recent years have made a noticeable impact. The end of each track is met by a deafening chorus of claps and whistles. Simon and Garfunkel’s songs progressively gather participation and by the end of The Boxer the audience echoes ‘li la li li’ in unison. Huge numbers of people listen appreciatively as the pair deliver their legendary vocals. Despite the scale of these gigs, crowds become unusually hushed as tinkling pianos and acoustic guitars introduce familiar tunes. In recent years Simon and Garfunkel have played large arena venues. The Boxer’s depiction of a lost youth and A Bridge Over Troubled Water’s reassurance that ‘if you need a friend I’m sailing right behind’ attract an audience of all ages. Simon and Garfunkel’s literary lyrics continue to resonate broadly. The hype is unsurprising considering that the legendary American folk duo, famed for their vocal harmonies, haven’t collaborated on studio work since the release of Bridge Over Trouble Water in 1970 and were barely speaking between 19. ![]() There is always great hype when Simon and Garfunkel reunite for a live performance. ![]()
